What is the most common myth about hair loss?
Very often, many patients assume that the main cause of their hair loss is because of their oily scalp. This is generally a myth – unless there is an underlying scalp diseases. In fact, most irreversible hair loss is not associated with any disease, nor is poor diet a factor at all. The reality is that hair may simply thin as a result of predetermined genetic factors and the overall aging process.
Apart from hair transplant which is very costly, what other effective hair loss treatments are there?
There are at least five potentially effective treatment options. These include medications such as Minoxidil (Rogaine), and Finasteride (Propecia), which are for long-term use. Stopping these drugs does not worsen or exacerbate prior hair loss. The patient will simply revert to the state he would have been in had he never started treatment.
Minoxidil (Rogaine), and Finasteride (Propecia) have been proven medically and scientifically to be effective in hair regrowth.
Another topical medication called bimatoprost (Latisse) is also be effective. It is used off-label for help in selected cases of hair loss. Latisse is currently FDA approved for eyelash growth enhancement but is no longer available in Singapore.
Finally, new research has suggested that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) may be a viable and effective treatment option. LLLT works by increasing terminal hair density by reversing the miniaturization process and causing follicles in a resting phase to shift into the growing phase.
The utilization of growth factors and applying it to the scalp to promote hair regeneration is the newest and most promising treatment to watch out for. Although this procedure is used routinely to treat hair loss in Europe, USA, Korea & Japan. In Singapore, it is still being studied and is pending MOH approval.
Finasteride’s hair-raising success is due to its ability to specifically inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into a more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Propecia’s 1 mg dose of finasteride can effectively lower DHT levels in the scalp by as much as 60% when taken daily. It is DHT that shrinks or miniaturizes the hair follicle, which eventually leads to baldness. This 60% reduction in DHT has proven to stop the progression of hair loss in 86% of men taking the drug during clinical trials. 65% of trial participants had what was considered a substantial increase of hair growth.
Minoxidil was approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness. For many years, minoxidil in pill form was widely used to treat high blood pressure. Just like finasteride, researchers discovered a very interesting side effect of the drug. People taking the medication were growing hair in unexpected places, such as on their cheeks and the back of their hands. Some people grew hair on their foreheads.
Some enterprising researchers had the notion that applying minoxidil topically, directly on the head, might grow hair on balding areas. It did, to varying degrees depending on the extent of the hair loss, but at the time it was revolutionary.

It is hypothesized that LLLT initiates the chemical reaction in the cells that make up the follicle’s epithelial matrix causing the proliferative activity.
Much evidence points out that follicular hair loss is reversed via the application of laser energy. Observations of wavelength stimulation of optimal hair growth, has shown precisely what wavelengths, power, and intensity are necessary for optimal effect in stimulating new hair growth.
It is important to note that heat is not associated with the photochemical and photo therapeutic effects of LLLT. LLLT is a low wattage ‘cold light’ laser, and while there are visible red wavelengths, there is no sensation on the skin of persons undergoing treatment. Cold lasers are safe and universally accepted as such by medical authorities worldwide. Also significant is the fact that there are no side-effects associated with the use of LLLT.
LLLT received the approving nod from the FDA and has been widely recognized as the gold standard scalp rejuvenating laser to curb the loss of habitat and rebuild healthy homes for follicles under threat.
The vast majority of physicians and medical experts agree that LLLT can be effective in growing hair in those with male pattern hair loss. Experts have also observed and noted that the overall health and condition of hair may be improved in a LLLT treated area.

Direct Hair Therapy
Hair loss can be due to a loss of minerals and vitamins from the body and the scalp, as a result of stress or major body changes as well as poor health.
