What can this treatment possibly do?
The removal, reduction and control of acne & pimples.
Acne and pimples affect a large number of youths and can persist into adulthood. It is an inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit and brought about by follicular hyperkeratinisation, increased sebum production. Follicular dyskeratosis causes formation of the microcomedo and is believed to be central to the development of acne. The activation and cellular immune responses subsequently occur with genetics, androgens diet and stress also playing a role.
What medical technology or device does this treatment utilise and how it is done?
We use Topical Retinoids, Oral Retinoids, Carbon Laser Peels and Salicylic Acid Wash to remove, reduce and control ace and pimples.
Retinoids (oral and topical)
Retinoids are commonly used in the management of acne. This class of medication targets the follicular dyskeratosis central to acne pathogenesis and also possesses anti-inflammatory properties. Retinoids are structural and functional analogues of vitamin A that exert multiple biological effects. The key to their efficacy is their ability to mediate their effects through their intranuclear retinoid receptors.
It is commonly accepted that topical retinoids are very effectively for acne treatment. Of the different anti-acne medications, retinoids are considered the first-line and arguably the essential agents to normalise the abnormal follicular differentiation seen in acne. By targeting microcomedones, retinoids treat and can also prevent the development of new acne and pimples. This prophylactic property is the basis for including topical retinoid as the foundation in almost all acne regimens.
Carbon Laser Peels
This treatment involves the use of the 1064 Nd:Yag Laser, which is a non-ablative laser, together with a topically applied carbon suspension peel.
The 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser can penetrate the dermis deeply and cause diffuse heating of dermal tissues without damaging the epidermis. The 1064- nm Nd:YAG lasers have also been reported to be effective in the treatment of acne scars, and helps to control the dermal inflammation associated with the inflammatory acne lesions and pimples.
Salicylic Acid Wash
Salicylic acid (SA) is a lipid-soluble beta-hydroxy acid. Salicylic acid is thought to solubilize intercellular lipids in the stratum corneum and lyse comedones via dissolution of intercellular surface lipids.
What are the likely results? Any side effects or downtime?
Retinoids (oral and topical)
Retinoid is known to be effective in treating acne given it addresses the primary factors associated with acne. A lag period of 1 to 3 months may occur before the onset of the therapeutic effect and a flare of acne during the first month may be observed. Continued healing of acne after the discontinuation of therapy is frequently seen as well.
Common adverse effect associated with topical retinoid use is local skin irritation, which peaks within the first month of treatment and improves thereafter.
Carbon Laser Peels
The Carbon Laser Peel treatment was rapid and effective for treating the inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions.
Significant reductions in the acne lesion counts were observed. Furthermore, the treatment
effects were sustained at approximately 4 weeks after the final treatment. The acne severity followed the same pattern of improvement.
Mild and transient redness may occur which will usually disappear in a few hours.
